NEW EP 'WHILE AUS BURNS'
“Between December 27 '19 and January 7 '20 I drove from my home town in Central Qld, Darumbal country, to my new home in Naarm, Wurundjeri country - about 3500km's down the East Coast of so-called Australia during the peak of the Black Summer Bushfires. The damage I witnessed has stayed with me, burned into my vision. I got to Melbourne with a fire in my belly and this EP spilled out. ‘While Aus Burns’ was initially going to be a follow up to the 'Scomo Goes To Hawaii' EP I put out on Christmas eve. One part written from the perspective of a leader on a tropical island who abandons a country in crisis, the other from a powerless pleb witnessing the full impact of the crisis - a crisis exacerbated by a succession of similarly corrupt self-serving leaders, refusing to take action on climate change, propping up dead industries, hoarding all the wealth for an increasingly smaller plutocratic society whilst shifting the blame onto the impotent masses. Scomo goes to Hawaii while Aus burns.
As the crises piled up on 2020 I shelved these tracks, I found them hard to revisit, but with Scott Morrison's recent announcement of a gas-led recovery out of Covid the fire in my belly returned and it felt necessary to add these songs to the canon - A reminder of where fossil fuels have got us so far. These pig-headed, pork-barrelled, narcissistic white men - so ideologically opposed to renewable energy sources, scientific facts, Indigenous knowledge, empathy/equality/equity - are leading us into the inferno. We can no longer ignore the effects of human greed, patriarchy, colonisation and global resource mismanagement.
I chucked it up for streaming on bandcamp for now, doing a limited cassette thru Marthouse Records which is out October 30, preorder is up on the same link. Much love 🖤”
